New Hope For MS, Crohn's

An experimental drug may offer hope for people with multiple sclerosis or Crohn's disease. Preliminary findings reported in
the New England Journal of Medicine suggest that natalizumab can reduce relapses in some MS patients and improve quality of life
for people with Crohn's disease.

Natalizumab, also known as Antegren, prevents immune cells from reaching sites of
inflammation in MS and Crohn's, The Associated Press reports. Researchers tested the drug in 213 people with MS and 248 people with Crohn's disease in North America and Europe. MS patients who took natalizumab had about a 90 percent reduction in new brain lesions compared to people taking a placebo, and about half
the number of relapses. Crohn's disease patients who took natalizumab had higher remission and response rates than people
getting a placebo.

There were few serious side effects reported
in either group, the AP says. However, both studies were small and both looked at patients for a only a very short period of
time. The researchers say larger and longer-term studies are needed to assess the true benefits and risks of the drug.

The studies were funded by Elan Corp. and Biogen Inc., the companies that made the drug, and some of the researchers involved have received grant money or worked for the manufacturers, the AP says.
